Winds keep fanning pesky Millard County fire as it grows to 70,000 acres

Hundreds of firefighters were cutting and digging containment lines Thursday around the growing Canal Fire, which has blackened more than 70,000 acres in Millard County since June 25, when lightning sparked the blaze outside Oak City.Burning about about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, the blaze remained small for the first few days, but high winds Sunday whipped it into Utah’s largest fire of the season as it churned through the Canyon and Gilson ranges west of Leamington.
