Oregon forest-thinning project saved homes, but highlights obstacles

Thanks to the U.S. Forest Service and local groups, thinning of overgrown forest created a buffer zone around Sisters, Ore., that saved homes by slowing a wildfire and allowing firefighters to corral it. But replicating the work across the sprawling reaches of the West poses several challenges.
