Japan center Timothy Lafaele scored the only try of the half after the host team capitalized on a yellow card to Samoa flanker TJ Ioane.
Ioane went to the sin-bin for a no-arms shoulder charge on Japan winger Kotaro Matsushima. Japan scored a couple of minutes later, with returning flanker Michael Leitch win
