Migrant child deaths prompt CBP policy change

TUCSON – The deaths of two young migrant children in government custody have prompted policy change at U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy died late Christmas Eve in New Mexico. Guatemalan officials identified him as Felipe Gomez Alonso. His death comes just weeks after 7-year-old Jakelin Caal died while in CBP custody.
The Guatemalan consul in Phoenix, Oscar Padilla, recently flew to New Mexico to help get Gomez Alonso’s body back to his home country.
