'Mummy' not quite a wrap

The Mummy isn’t a remake of the 1932 original starring Boris Karloff or the 1999 update starring Brendan Fraser — though there are nods to both; it’s the launch of Universal’s old-as-new mega-franchise, recently christened the Dark Universe. As such, The Mummy isn’t a vehicle for either of its stars, Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, rather the classic monster brand and its continuation on the big screen.
