Black bear numbers on rise in Michigan

There are about 20,000 black bears in the state of Michigan, with the bulk of that population living in the semiwilderness of the Upper Peninsula. But a significant growth in black bear numbers has taken place in the northern half of the lower peninsula, where hardwood and conifer forests provide the habitat and varied food sources these large omnivores need.
