Aside from inherited wealth, education is an American's best hedge against poverty. Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers show bachelor's degree holders make about twice as much as high school grads when they're working and are half as likely to be unemployed. About 78 percent of King County residents in poverty don't have a bachelor's degree.
