Last call for lunch: Mitchell's Downtown ends food service Friday

According to a menu framed on the wall, on Aug. 23, 1933, the lunch special at Mitchell’s was a cup of Navy bean soup, and a choice of ham and cabbage, cold sardines, English beef stew or breaded veal chop with a side of potatoes, a beet salad, bread pudding for dessert and a drink, all for the peak-Depression era price of 25 cents. On Thursday — a few months shy of 85 years later — it was still a bargain: roast chicken, stuffing, potatoes and corn for a mere $8.75.
