CMU researchers reinvent the wheel

Most vehicles are designed either for paved roads or exclusively for off-road terrain – it’s nearly impossible to drive the same car from pavement onto a sandbank, for instance. But researchers at the National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville have recently developed shape-shifting wheels that enable vehicles to smoothly transform round wheels into triangular tracks almost instantaneously.
