Stock market today: Wall Street hangs near records as it counts down to a rate cut

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are hanging near their records Tuesday, as Wall Street continues to expect relief for the economy to arrive Wednesday through a bigger-than-usual cut to interest rates.
The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged in midday trading and just 0.6% below its all-time high set in July, as of 12:45 p.m. Eastern time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 21 points, or 0.1%, from its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite was up 0.1%.
