UAlbany student detained, ordered deported despite dropped criminal charges

Omar Helalat was in his last semester at the University at Albany when immigration authorities detained him after he overstayed a tourist visa with his family two decades ago. He's been detained for nine months even though the domestic violence charges that put him in detention and revoked his DACA status have been revoked. He's one of many more undocumented immigrants without criminal convictions arrested by ICE - a number that increased by 50 percent this year.
