Late in the afternoon on Jan. 16, 1991, the United States and a coalition of nations launched a full assault on Baghdad. The coalition’s mission was to force the Iraqi army out of Kuwait after that country’s strongman, President Saddam Hussein, ordered his troops into the neighboring country on Aug. 2, 1991, claiming Kuwait was stealing oil from Iraq.
