The Riggs Report: Protection for national monuments in question

In California, where the modern environmental movement was born out of a disastrous 1969 oil spill in the Santa Barbara Channel, it would appear to be a monumental mistake: the idea of rolling back protected status for five national monuments. Such a decision would open up these spots to drilling, logging and mining by commercial interests.
