Why 13,000 plastic turtles will bob in an Alvin bayou

You might find turtles swimming Mustang Bayou in Alvin’s National Oak Park on any warm day, but you will only see the plastic, bathtub kind — 13,000 of them — there on one day of the year.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, hordes of toy turtles will take the plunge at the 20th annual Turtle Race 5K and Fun Run to benefit the Alvin ISD Education Foundation Fund.
The event raises money to help the foundation’s effort to provide student scholarships and develop projects for Alvin ISD.
