It wasn't the ongoing opioid overdose crisis that inspired Kim Janda to start developing a heroin vaccine. America's latest drug problem hadn't even really set in when the Scripps Research Institute chemist went to work in his lab. But developing countries were witnessing an HIV spike, driven in part by intravenous drug use, and Janda wanted to find a way to fight it.
