Legendary Oahu big-wave surfer Peter Cole, the tall, gracious, soft-spoken winner of the 1958 Makaha International contest and a stalwart rider into his 60s at big Waimea Bay, died peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning in his North Shore home, in the presence of his wife, Sally, and their family, his son, Peter Jr., said Sunday.
