Sunday Marks 40th Anniversary Of Big Thompson Flood

By Chris SpearsDENVER (CBS4) – On July 31, 1976, one of the most catastrophic weather events in Colorado’s history unfolded as tourists celebrated the state’s centennial.
A slow moving thunderstorm developed near Estes Park and heavy rain started to fall. Winds in the atmosphere were light and not strong enough to steer the thunderstorm away.
A foot of rain fell on parts of the canyon with one report of eight inches in an hour and some places recording as much as 14 inches.
