Preliminary examination of failed Southwest engine shows 'metal fatigue'

A preliminary look at the failed engine on Southwest flight 1380 that killed one passenger shows one of the 24 fan blades inside the engine was missing.There also appeared to be metal fatigue in the place where the missing blade was attached to the engine, according to Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.Metal fatigue is something that would be difficult to spot because it's not evident from a glance, Sumwalt said.
