With help from science, artist creates alluring abstract prints

DELAWARE, Ohio — Thomas Saunders calls his Zeiss microscopes his “paintbrushes.” Using them along with a crystal-imaging process and such everyday items as coffee, aspirin, oil, beer and wine, he creates colorful abstract prints that inspire thoughts of flowers, mountainous landscapes and even space stations.
