U.S. Supreme Court upholds affirmative action policy
In a major affirmative action case, the U.S. Supreme Court today approved a University of Texas policy which allows university officials to consider an applicant’s race as one of many factors in admitting some students. In a 4-3 vote authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court concluded the Texas admission plan is constitutional, in large part because most of the students are admitted if they finish among the top 10 percent in their high classes in the state of Texas.
