Panel begins to talk about unemployment reforms

The Unemployment Compensation Reform Joint Committee held the first of five hearings Thursday, attempting to tackle a problem that has eluded state leaders for at least two decades. The solution lies in a long-debated balance between benefits provided to jobless workers and taxes paid by employers that fund the system. Republican legislative leaders say they hope to pass a bill when the legislature returns after the Nov. 8 election.
