John Switzer: Butterflies know all about winter survival

The other day, I took a photo of the caterpillar of a black swallowtail butterfly on a fennel plant. Fennel is an herb that is a member of the parsley family. Black swallowtails use plants in the parsley family as hosts on which to lay their eggs.
