Ex-probation officer gets probation for theft

LONDON — A veteran Madison County probation officer, who tearfully admitted to stealing cash two years ago from a juvenile offender, avoided prison Thursday morning because of her otherwise clean record. Tammy Stoops, 48, of South Solon, faced up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine for the theft in office charge, a fourth-degree felony. Instead she faces five years of probation and a $1,000 fine and court costs.
