City police, blacks grapple with painful week

Standing before the newest class of officers at the Columbus Police Training Academy, the police chaplain bowed his head and prayed Friday. "There is a great darkness over the land," the Rev. Kevin Lutz told the 35 officers of Franklin County police departments seated before him. This was supposed to be a joyous occasion, yet there was no way anyone could keep the turmoil, shock and racial divide spawned by the violence this nation has experienced over the previous 72 hours from seeping in.
