AEP reports $2.3 billion charge as coal-fired power plants lose value

American Electric Power is reporting a one-time charge of $2.3 billion, mostly to reflect the loss of value of power plants in Ohio that have struggled to compete. With the charge, the Columbus-based utility posted a third-quarter loss of $766 million compared to a profit of $518 million in the prior-year quarter.
