Ice boom time has arrived for the Niagara River
BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) – The annual rite of winter is underway as placement of the Buffalo ice boom in the Niagara River gets underway today.
Each winter since 1964, the Lake Erie- Niagara River ice boom is installed to reduce the amount of ice entering the Niagara River. This prevents the potential of ice jams which can damage shoreline property and dam up water flow for the hydro- electric power system.
