Ice boom installation complete
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — After installation began in the middle of December, the ice boom on Lake Erie is finished for the 2015-2016 season.
The Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom is an 8,800-feet long structure composed of 22 spans of steel pontoons. It is implemented to help prevent clogging of hydro-electric intakes, as well as flooding and damage to infrastructure that can be caused by ice jamming up in the Niagara River.
