Nuttin' but nuts at museum
If the three-digit temperature kept you from venturing out to the Kern County Nut Festival last year, you weren't alone. Attendance was down by 3,000 people from the 10,000 who ventured out to the inaugural -- and much more temperate -- festival the year before. "Last year, it was the first time it hit 100 degrees; it was the first heat wave of the year," said Roger Perez, executive director of the Kern County Museum, which puts on the event. "That tends to scare people."
