Crashes, explosions, murder and court cases; 2014 had plenty

There was no dearth of stories involving law enforcement and the courts in 2014 -- crashes, fires, shootings, gas leaks, verdicts and the unexpected were unfortunately common occurrences.

The Californian asked the two reporters who cover such news to develop a list of a dozen of the year's most memorable stories.
