Caltrans: Freeway trees may perish from drought

Two weeks before a state board considers requiring 30 percent cuts from local water agencies, a Caltrans official said Tuesday the agency has reduced its water usage by about half in the Bakersfield area. John Liu, Caltrans' director of maintenance and operations for District 6, which includes Bakersfield, said that equates to a savings of hundreds of millions of gallons districtwide.
