Activists sue to speed up injection well shutdowns

Environmental activists filed a lawsuit Thursday attempting to erase a state plan giving California oil field operators as much as 22 months to stop injections into federally protected aquifers.
The suit in Alameda County Superior Court says injections at 490 wastewater disposal wells and 1,987 high-pressure steam wells constitute groundwater contamination that should be stopped as soon as possible. Most of the wells are in Kern County.
