Hurricane Irma makes landfall in the Florida Keys as a Cat. 4 storm

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Irma strengthened early Sunday morning to a Category 4 major hurricane as it made landfall in the lower Florida Keys around 7:30 a.m. early Sunday, with its next potential landfall west of Ft. Myers Florida on Sunday afternoon. Interaction with the Cuban mainland has weakened the storm, but devastating impacts are still likely in the Florida Keys, which could come as early as daybreak Sunday.
