AOL officially discontinues Instant Messenger

NEW YORK CITY (KXAN) — Some may wish to pause for a moment of silence today for a sound they’ll never hear again: the creak of a door closing on AOL Instant Messenger.
Back in October, the company announced it would discontinue the service the morning of Dec. 15. It was released in 1997 and was the first chat app of its kind. It peaked in 2001 with more than 36 million people creating screen names, buddy lists and away messages.
