Abbott asks USDA to prohibit 'unhealthy foods' from SNAP benefits

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- On Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins asking for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service to prohibit the purchase of "unhealthy foods" with SNAP benefits.
In the letter, Abbott said that now, under the Trump administration, states can take steps to "eliminate the opportunity to buy junk food with SNAP benefits and assure that taxpayer dollars are used only to purchase healthy, nutritious food.
