93-year-old sends $15,000 to scammer but realizes her mistake just in time

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An elderly woman is thanking the Travis County Sheriff’s Office after she fell victim to a phone scheme and was nearly scammed out of $15,000.
Renata Collins, 93, said she got a frantic call from whom she thought was her granddaughter on Monday.
“The phone rang at 10 in the morning with a girl crying. It sounded a lot like my granddaughter,” she explained. “She was crying and sniffing. ‘Don’t tell my mother, but I need your help,'”
