Walrus Islands designated as national historic landmark

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Interior Secretary Sally Jewell has designated 24 U.S. sites as new national historic landmarks, including one in Alaska.
Jewell announced the designation Wednesday of Walrus Islands Archaeological District near Togiak.
A department announcement says it’s one of the few remaining places with evidence of human occupation of the Bering Sea continental shelf when sea levels were substantially lower.
