Second dog dies unexpectedly in this year’s Iditarod

A 2-year-old dog from the team of Scott Smith, bib 69, died while being transported to Anchorage from Galena, according to Iditarod Trail Committee race marshall Mark Nordman.
The veteran musher dropped the young dog, Smoke, at the Manley Hot Springs checkpoint on Tuesday because of a wrist injury.
A necropsy will be performed on the dog to determine the cause of death.
