Lightning network helps confirm volcanic eruption

Bogoslof erupted this weekend for the thirty-ninth time since December.
Researchers at the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) were able to warn pilots to avoid the area while the eruption was still happening, thanks to an alert of lightning in the area.
The plume climbed to over 40,000 feet Sunday afternoon and an ash could be seen over 50 miles away. A dangerous situation for any planes in the area.
