Iditarod fans ‘trailgate’ at the Nenana checkpoint

Being a spectator along the Iditarod Trail was a little easier this year with the route starting in Fairbanks.
The sub-zero temperatures didn’t stop high-spirited fans from filing onto the ice at the Nenana checkpoint. Joshua Hensel and his friends traveled from Denali to cheer on teams.
“It’s really cool to see it all come together here at the race,” Hensel said.
A year ago, he and his girlfriend left their “nine-to-five jobs” in Michigan and moved to Alaska
