Deep snow along much of the 2017 Iditarod trail

Many of the checkpoints along the 968-mile long Iditarod trail between Fairbanks and Nome have plenty of snow and ice, as would be expected this time of year. The last time the Iditarod started in Fairbanks, the snow depth was just over one foot. This year, we’re seeing almost three times that much.
As of Tuesday, Fairbanks is sitting under 32 inches of snow. That is down slightly from earlier this week when it reached 34 inches.  It’s been 24 years since Fairbanks has seen
