Bittersweet last day at ASD as pink slips go out

It was a bittersweet last day of school in the Anchorage School District; Wednesday morning, 220 educators received pink slips.
The principal at Bayshore Elementary hand delivered four layoff notices to two first-year teachers and two second-year teachers, including Jennifer Derks.
Derks broke the news to her fourth-grade class in tears. They spent the afternoon signing yearbooks and saying goodbye.
Caden Cartwright says Mrs. Derks was one of the best teachers he’s ever had.
