NEWPORT BEACH — The PGA Tour Champions was born because Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino got old.
It is known today as the place where Bernhard Langer never does.
In truth, it has become one of the few made-for-TV ideas that hit the wall and stuck. By whatever name, the 50-and-over seniors have been rolling for dollars since 1980, a profitable second act for Langer, Fred Couples, Tom Lehman, Miguel Angel Jimenez and their peers, a timely mulligan for others.
