Whicker: Maddon looks forward to a stripped-down season
When he managed Tampa Bay and Chicago, Joe Maddon held “Legion Weeks.”
The Rays and Cubs didn’t have to show up at 2 p.m., didn’t have to study printouts, didn’t have to watch videos and then hold meetings to deconstruct them, didn’t even have to take batting practice. Show up and play. Just like American Legion ball.
Now Maddon is the idled manager of the Angels, his old school. He is waiting for an appetizer season of maybe 114 games, maybe fewer, maybe none
