Whicker: Bob Baffert’s Triple Crown barn leans on Jimmy Barnes

ARCADIA — Jimmy Barnes is sometimes known as the man behind Bob Baffert’s scenes. Actually he’s not behind anything. He is the scene.
No one is witnessing at 4 a.m., when Barnes beats the sun to Santa Anita. He checks the feed tubs to make sure Baffert’s horses are eating like champions. He studies their eyes and their disposition.
“You have to read your horse,” he said. “The horse can’t tell you how it’s feeling.”
Baffert and Barn
