Just a few days into his tenure as UC Irvine’s Dean of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Stephen Barker got the shock of his life: James Irvine Swinden, president of the Irvine Museum, was planning on bequeathing the university about 1,300 works of art, the world’s largest collection of California impressionist and plein air paintings.
