USC to name starting quarterback next week

LOS ANGELES — As Clay Helton spoke with a crowd of reporters after a preseason practice Tuesday evening, he arrived at a familiar topic.
It was 11 days before USC’s season opener against UNLV, and the Trojans remained without a starting quarterback. Over the padded practice that lasted for more than two hours, JT Daniels, Matt Fink and Jack Sears continued to split reps, just as they had throughout training camp and in a pair of scrimmages earlier this month.
No decision was imminent
