Unprecedented smoke layer darkens Bay Area skies as massive wildfires burn

Smoke from massive wildfires burning throughout the western United States blotted out the sun across the Bay Area and much of Northern California on Wednesday morning, casting skies in an orange glow that seemed like the stuff of science fiction and scrambling weather forecasts that couldn’t account for the unprecedented blanket over the atmosphere.
