Proposed tax on sugary drinks will do more harm than good

When the California Legislature voted two years ago to increase the gas tax by 12 cents per gallon to fund transportation projects, it triggered a successful recall campaign against a State Senator who supported it – and spurred a statewide initiative campaign, ultimately unsuccessful, to overturn it.
Some would argue, given the state’s obvious transportation needs, that it was a fight worth having and a political risk worth taking.
