Police shooting law strikes the right balance
Count this Editorial Board among those who often bemoan the unwillingness of the Legislature to tackle serious statewide issues, but sometimes credit is due. This week, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a compromise bill that is a reasonable, carefully crafted response to a rash of police shootings.
Law-enforcement officials have tough and dangerous jobs. They often have to make split-second decisions. Nevertheless, there are too many cases where officers have killed suspects who are fleeing or unarmed.
