Plaque dedicated for first San Clemente man killed in battle in WWII
A plaque dedicated to the first San Clemente resident killed in a World War II battle has been installed on a memorial wall at the city’s Park Semper Fi.
George Edson Smith, who served in the Navy aboard the USS LST-460, was declared dead on Dec. 26, 1944, days after kamikaze pilots attacked his ship, according to historical records.
Smith and his family moved to San Clemente in 1925, when he was 3 years old. He attended Capistrano Union High School in San Juan Capistrano.
